Some people like to purchase and display antiques throughout their home, other people just like to have the odd piece on display. Still more people actually like to deal in antiques on a limited part time basis, whatever your interest in antiques is, since the advent of the internet the market has suddenly opened up massively. No longer do you have to travel sometimes great distances to go see what a particular dealer has to offer, you can now browse online from the comfort of your own home while you pursue that little bit of treasure that you are looking for.
With the market being opened up so much, this does mean than an extra level of caution needs to be taken before committing to any purchases, especially if purchasing from an overseas supplier. Doing research on not only the piece you are looking to buy but also on the potential seller is a good way to be cautious when purchasing online.
Visiting in Person
If you are looking for something very specific and you do find what you are looking for on the internet, some people will prefer to travel and visit the seller before committing to a purchase. Depending on the value of the product and also the distance needed to go, some people will literally fly around the world for something special. It is also good to be able to see an item in person and in natural light as there are lots of things that can be done with photography to make things look better than they actually are. By getting up close and personal you will be able to get to scrutinize the piece thoroughly.
It is also easier to get a rapport with the person selling as well, although you may want to make sure they do not apply too much pressure on you to make the sale. Some people find it hard to say no when they are dealing with someone on a face to face basis. This can be a warning sign as a good reputable dealer would want a sale but would not pressure too much to enact it. If you really want the piece then you will come back.
There are a lot of dealers around the world who trade the goods online so there is a world of choice out there.
- Antique Watches
The list can go on and on and some people will collect almost anything that is old. Before you buy your antique watch online though, you are best to do a bit of research n the seller of the item. Do a search on internet forums and see what you can find out about the sellers and what other buyers thought of them as well. There is a wealth of information out there is we look for it. Spending a little time doing some research can help to avoid you being out of pocket and with an item that is not what you initially thought it was.
There are lots of reputable dealers out there but you do need to be cautious as there are a lot of cowboys as well. Always try and get provenance for the piece that you buy, otherwise you may just have the sellers word for what t actually is, unless you can get it independently appraised.
There are other things which you will need to be cautious of as well if buying from a company abroad, whether it is online or visiting in person. You will need to make sure that you take into account the current exchange rate, this way you know exactly how much it is costing you n your own currency. You will also need to be aware of any Import or Export duty which might be owed on the tem as well as any VAT.
Doing your research online will be able to answer all of these plus other questions in advance of your purchase. Shipping of the product as well as insurance and any duty owed may push the actual cost of the product beyond what you intended to pay and were comfortable with. It can be a mine field out there, but if you take your time, do some research and make an informed choice, you can get some excellent bargains as well. So who is up for a bit of shopping then?
